2024 MVP Memorial Foundation Leadership Award

Matt Poyner was a 16-year-old sophomore at Langley High School when he died suddenly of viral myocarditis on February 24, 2015. He was a promising baseball player, a respected student and a friend to many throughout Northern Virginia. He attended Paul VI Catholic High School as a freshman and played baseball with the Stars Baseball organization. The Matthew Vernon Poyner Memorial Foundation was created upon his death to foster this legacy. Matt’s family, friends, and community supporters donate generously to the foundation so that good works will be done in his name for years to come.

In addition to supporting veterans causes and funding myocarditis research, we are proud to offer a $2,000 leadership award to a well-rounded high school senior who models the traits we valued in Matt - compassion for others, a strong work ethic and a passion to excel in endeavors outside the classroom. This is a one-time award in the amount of $2,000 paid to the college or university where the student enrolls as a freshman.

This award is open to college-bound seniors from the Stars Baseball organization. One student will be selected to receive the award. Students should be nominated to apply by leaders in the their organizations. Applications should be completed and submitted for consideration no later than Monday, April 8, 2024.
